Week 3 of Youth Mission Camp 2018 brought us new friends from several United Methodist churches in the Birmingham area that partner together in a youth ministry cooperative – how awesome is that! The churches in the cooperative include Highlands UMC, Woodlawn UMC, Eastlake UMC, Avondale UMC, St Junia UMC, and Beloved Community Church.
The Birmingham Youth Coop team served faithfully through the heat atop Ms. Turk’s roof. Several pieces of roof decking were replaced and new shingles were laid as the crew got to know Ms. Turk. The day camp crew explored the story of Nehemiah with our Sonshine Day Camp children and talked about how God calls us to be re-builders of His masterpieces!
Our evening sessions with the team were very fruitful as our mission interns led the team through Nehemiah and a nightly “blueprint drafting” session. By the end of the week, the team had drafted a vision, values, mission, and strategies that they could take home to Birmingham to continue in mission with their churches and local communities – mission is more than a trip!
