Day 2: Recap (Saturday)

Today will be a little shorter but just a few thoughts. First, I am reminded of a prayer of David I want to share recorded in 2 Samuel 7:29

29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

On Friday and Saturday we had a group from Prattville UMC come to Tuskegee to serve with us. They helped Ms. Betty finish the drywall in her home and then went to Tuskegee Methodist to continue with our laminate flooring. Each night they discussed the dynamics of poverty and the challenges of surviving on fixed incomes. They were truly a blessing to us and their pastor, Rev. Rob Couch and his partner in ministry and life, Crystal, will be coming to sit with me later this week. I think there is truly something special when we help each other with our homes. Painting a room becomes a paint party. Hanging sheet rock becomes a moment t talk about the “hang ups we all face”. Early in our history, we helped each other build homes. It seems we don’t have to lose that. More so, I love when the body of Christ comes together to help and support one another.

Each night is gets a little cooler. I had to borrow an extra blanket from a friend…and how many families had too also add that extra layer? How many did not have an extra layer? Hard questions.

This morning my Sunday School class came to the shack and we had a discussion about the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-51). If you have a moment, check it out. How many times do we miss the “Lazarus” around our town? When have we missed an opportunity to use our influence and resources? What are the dangerous consequences when we have a lifestyle of not noticing? Again, hard questions.

I appreciate the gifts coming in on this Sunday and Sabbath. As we think about rest and restoration, I pray we will be intentional in noticing and responding. That is just what we do—we love!

Grateful for Jimmy Aulner who stayed last night (and the awesome meal from Kelly Aulner and family) being joined later by John Bibliss, our interns, and Rev. Laura Eason-chaplain at East Alabama Medical Center today!

Blessings from the Shack!
