Why would you lay down your net if you were a fisherman? What do you do when Jesus invites you?
Do we feel like God can use us?
So many times in my life, I did not think God could use me. Life was mostly a struggle. My mom divorced twice (for good reasons), we moved frequently to new towns, we did not have a lot of financial resources and times were tough. Although my parents divorced, they were both very supportive and very encouraging.
Growing up, I was not deeply connected with a church and attendance was sporadic. However, I did stay engaged in a personal relationship with Jesus. But there came a time when I felt far away, very disconnected and questioned if I was worthy of God’s love and serving him. What do you do when you feel like you are not worthy to be called by Jesus?
Jesus is always calling us, wooing us to him. In Revelation 3:20, there is a beautiful passage that says Jesus is standing at the door and knocking; he wants us to let him in! He is always calling. Jesus believed in building a trusted team that would then build other trusted teams and communities we now call the church. Starting on a lake bank, he began inviting a group of fishermen to lay down their nets and join him on an incredible journey where they would fish for people. A cold and impersonal religion among the Jews had developed and Jesus was going to show people what God and followership looked like. Following Jesus was warm, personal, free of heavy restrictions and valued all people. Eventually, Jesus would appoint these twelve apostles to stay with him and go about healing, teaching, and serving and pointing all to God, the Father.
You too may have come through some hard times. Or maybe, things have been too easy and you are unsure how God might use you. Fear can creep in and we feel we are not ready. Here is the cool thing, Jesus calls us and shows us how to serve. When he invited the disciples to follow him, notice how they responded? This can be done by you as well.
Reflection:
  • Why do you go out and serve others?
  • What are some of the lessons you have learned?
  • What are three items that make it hard to follow Jesus?
  • What are some ways that are easier?
  • What is one way you can show that you have been called?
Today and over the weekend, reflect on the ways  Jesus calls us to serve with him. Go and do one thing each day to serve someone else. With COVID-19, be creative and remember so many are feeling lonely and disconnected. Your call or text could be the game changer!
Prayer: Dear Jesus, today, let me recall how you called the disciples and how you are calling me. Forgive me of any sins that get in the way of hearing your call and serving someone else. I know that you value me and others and I get to partner with you to serve. It does not have to be anything big, just full of love. Thank you for loving me today! Amen.
