I awoke cold and balled up regretting not putting socks on my feet. The open windows and gaps in my roof let the cool air pervade the shack. I wondered how many others are trying to figure out what they will do about heat as winter approaches and how to seal their windows and doors.

Living in the shack is a little like camping, especially having to go to another facility for personal hygiene. My experience getting cleaned and ready in the morning makes me think about one of my friends who is a senior citizen and nearing her 89th birthday. She can no longer use her bathtub and shower because she cannot get in and out safely because of accessibility. She creatively finds ways to stay clean.

We are now working to repair a damaged floor that has a broken joist and an accessible shower system for her. Her shingles have well extended their 25-year lifespan and she is noticing small leaks developing. As you know, insurance does not cover maintenance.

Today, Ms. Walker, joins us to sit at the shack. What a story and life well lived. She is literally an angel. She is generous, kind, and has an apostolic spirit! She has danced with Elvis, baked cakes for judges, and gives so much-and she is 90! Her roof was shot and riddled with bullet holes, both entrance and exit, holes causing extensive leakage and damage. Our fundraising effort is in her name!

This is why we stay in the shacks. Not only does it let people get a visual understanding of keeping a home warm, safe, and dry, it deepens the reason why we engage compassionate volunteers to do most of this work and service. Befriending our neighbors can be such a difference maker in helping those in need get resources. In our case, home repairs.

You can follow the play-by-play and see our families, those coming to visit the shack and more by staying tuned to Facebook and Instagram. Of course, please give or share with someone else you may have a heart for home repair ministry and see the need and potential impact.

We’ll post the highlights daily!

Thank you so much!!!!

PS- It’s great having my mom, Denise Merrill, and my Aunt Beverly Schaeffer here with me! They came from Florida to visit!
