No More Shacks_The Sent Ones

It’s Day 5 of 6.

Goal: $200,000 to repair 25-40 more homes.

Raised to date: $19,000– 2 homes we can repair, 38 to go.

Every day we can walk into the mission field. Every day we can put on the identity of a “sent one”. Jesus said to his disciples just before his crucifixion and resurrection, “As the Father sent me, I am sending you. Go bear fruit that lasts.”  (Paraphrase John 20:21)

If we identified as Sent Ones, I believe we could and would care for the poor and meet their basic needs wholly and with dignity. If we knew our neighbors, we would wisely assess who legitimately needed help and who was lazy or mired in self-pity.

As agents of Christ’s grace and mercy, we possess massive and daily opportunities to witness and testify to his practical love: feeding the hungry, giving a bottle of water, providing for shelter, welcoming a stranger, caring for the sick, and yes, even visiting and caring for those who are incarcerated.

I’d much rather share all the stories of God’s restoration through people than be overwhelmed by the mountains of need we hear about daily. What if you could share a story of the neighbor you assisted in repairing their home? What if you could humbly point to your gift that purchased a bundle of shingles, a commode, plywood for floors, and/or lumber for wheelchair ramps? What if you could share with your family, friends, and colleagues your stories from a day of serving?

When you identify as a Sent One and get intentional, I believe you can. Thank you if you already are, and let’s do it again!

Just a few reflections from living in a shack. -Lisa

PS: Your gift today helps us start repairing Ms. Carla’s roof. The decking under her shingles is unsafe and there is evidence of mold in her insulation. She lives alone, and her Social Security can only pay for her basic needs. Will you help us help her? www.arm-al.org/shackdonate
