A Prayer for Rest

She walked into the office undaunted by Starbuck’s barking. She always barks at new people. Probably not a good look for ARM when someone comes in the door…but I digress.

From when she first looked into my eyes, I could see the light of Christ. Warm and inviting, they reflected a life of deep care for others.

Ms. Caroline was dropping by an application to receive home repairs. She tried to mail one but it never made it to us. She was hand delivering this one. I was fortunate to meet and talk with her. Typically other team members will initially greet those who come to visit us.

Her husband, Will, suffered a debilitating stroke four years ago. He is now wheel chair bound most of the time. When absolutely necessary, he will use a walker to get into smaller spaces. Ms. Caroline is now also a full-time caregiver.

She expressed a desire for him to have either a walk-in shower or walk in tub. The chore of getting him in and out of a traditional tub is too difficult. Currently, she gives him a sponge bath. Even to write this, I sense the hardship and possibly the shame her husband might feel. Furthermore, doors are not wide enough for him to get in and out through the wheelchair.

Yet, the tenderness, love, and care for Will are so evident. She never left her vows of “in sickness and in health”. As I listened to her story, my heart melted. I could hear her desperation. I could feel her deep fatigue.

I explained some of the options we have and a little of our process. I asked if I could pray with and for her. We held hands. I prayed for her husband’s health. I prayed for her to find rest and respite for the care she is giving 24/7. Now, I pray we can help Ms. Caroline get the resources Will needs so they can both thrive.

When she left, I stood for a moment thinking about her. Moved by her compassion. Touched by her care. Hopeful because people still do stay together despite intense hardship. Committed to seeing how we can care for her and Will.

Part II: Good News

The next day, Ms. Caroline came by to drop off more paperwork. Once again, I was the person to greet her. After thanking her, I asked if she was able to get a little rest. With a bright smile she proclaimed, yes, from our prayer yesterday! She explained, “after we prayed, I was able to go home and just rest. I felt a deep peace and refreshed.” Sometimes it is the simple acts we can do that have heavenly results.
